MARK SWAZO HINDS, TESUQUE

     A noted sculptor from Tesuque Pueblo, Mark combines various natural materials in his work. He uses limestone, marble, and alabaster, often decorating his pieces with parrot and turkey feathers. Mark's work can be seen on permanent display at the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. From his early years, Mark was surrounded by art in every form. His father, Patrick, was a well known and highly collectible painter. Then Mark studied under Allen Houser at the Institute of American Indian Art during his college years, and went on to carve fetishes.
     WOW! Almost completely ORANGE, this sculpted bear is made of orange alabaster that has not been on the open market for more than six years. It comes from Southern Utah, northwest of Zion National Park. Adorned with spiny oyster shell, Puki shell, and turquoise, it is simply gorgeous. The orange feathers are the actual breast feathers of the Military Macaw parrot – which is a hybrid parrot. The bundle is attached by deer hide painted with earth pigments and lacings wrapped around the middle of the bear. The alabaster is so bright, and the feathers just bring this piece to life!

JUAN QUAM

     Jane Quam is a 6 Directional "specialist" These pieces are wonderfully designed and carved. To the Zuni Indian, there are six cardinal directions. The six directions are each represented by a mountain of a different color; they are the guardians of these six regions and the masters of the medicine powers for that region. The fetishes of the six directions are animals of prey and are as follows:

* North -----------Mountain Lion (yellow)
* West ------------Bear (black or blue
* South -----------Badger (red)
* East ------------Wolf (white)
* Upper Region --Eagle (all colors)
* Lower Region --Mole (black)
